Case study of the Raben e-learning platform

The Raben Group has been operating on the market for over 90 years and is currently one of the largest logistics operators in Europe. In conducting its business, it emphasizes sustainable development, care for the natural environment, and innovative technological solutions. What sets the company apart? For years, Raben has been building an internal culture of safety and educating its employees, drivers, and partners in this area. Driving a truck is a big responsibility – the obligation to ensure your own safety, that of the cargo, and that of other road users. How did the educational campaign with the evocative title “Don’t be wild” come about? The following case study will tell you all about it.
The Challenge
One of the most important challenges for the Raben Group is to continuously raise drivers’ awareness of road safety. Due to the mobile nature of their work, it is extremely difficult to gather drivers for stationary training courses. The aim of introducing e-learning courses was to increase drivers’ awareness of safety, provide them with a convenient and flexible form of learning, and, at the same time, reduce the costs associated with organizing stationary training courses.
Therefore, there was a need to design a customized solution – that is, to adapt the platform to the customer’s requirements in terms of gamified training and to make it accessible on mobile devices as well.
„Our drivers are very important to us. It is thanks to them that we can carry out domestic and international transport – often over really long distances. We feel responsible for their safety and appropriate education in this area. Unfortunately, there have been situations among drivers that have threatened their safety and lives – mainly resulting from inattention and risky behavior. For example, texting while driving, driving while tired, or not maintaining a safe distance from another vehicle – these and many other situations can lead to tragic consequences. Our goal was to make drivers aware of the importance of following safety rules and paying attention to even the smallest details, which can ultimately determine their life and health. In order to reach as many drivers as possible and provide them with the opportunity to learn conveniently regardless of their location, we decided to use e-learning. However, we needed the right tool – an e-learning platform and engaging training courses.”

The Solution
In order to increase driver safety and raise awareness of potential hazards, the company decided to launch an educational campaign called “Don’t be wild.” Related materials were posted on an e-learning platform developed by HRcode.
„The “Don’t be wild” campaign reminds us how important it is to focus 100% on the road when driving – not to use cell phones, not to eat while driving, and to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of us. We believe that knowing and understanding the dangers on the road will allow us all to avoid accidents and protect our health and lives, as well as those of our loved ones and other road users. Life and health are non-negotiable for us.”

As part of the campaign, in cooperation with HRcode, a dedicated platform and 10 thematic training courses were created in areas related to road safety and maneuvering yards. Each training course took the form of a short animation and discussed a separate issue, including the effects of fatigue and lack of concentration, not wearing seat belts, and not following appropriate practices on maneuvering yards or highways. The training courses are available in Polish, English, Czech, German, and Hungarian.

„The platform was created by security specialists from the Raben Group, in cooperation with drivers. We wanted the training to be attractive and engaging for our employees. We opted for bold and entertaining content, which the HRcode team developed and presented in the form of short animations. Each one is a separate piece of knowledge that can be learned in just a few minutes.”

The platform is primarily intended for truck drivers, but it can also be useful for all road users – the animations are also available to users who are not logged in. The course takes the form of gamification – an interactive map, where the user unlocks successive areas by watching animations and answering related questions. Users do not have to complete the entire training in one go – their results are saved, even for users who do not have accounts on the platform. After unlocking all areas of the map, users take a knowledge test and have the opportunity to obtain a certificate for completing the training. Thanks to reporting, the company can check the progress of users in completing the training.

The platform also features additional video materials prepared as part of the “Don’t be wild” campaign. We are talking about the “Wall of the wild,” where users can take a closer look at irresponsible behavior on the road and its consequences. All this is illustrated with examples of “wild” anti-heroes tailored to the theme of the campaign.
The Results
As we expected, e-learning proved to be a very effective and convenient form of education for both parties – drivers, whose daily routine involves long journeys and little time for learning. All the objectives related to the implementation of the training have been achieved – increasing drivers’ awareness of safety, providing them with a convenient and flexible form of learning, and reducing the costs associated with organizing classroom training.
„E-learning courses are available to drivers anywhere and anytime, which has made it easy to tailor the material to their individual needs. The introduction of e-training has had a positive impact on the safety of our drivers, from whom we regularly receive positive feedback about the course. The implementation of the e-learning platform has also proved beneficial for the company’s budget, reducing the costs associated with organizing traditional training courses. In addition, the campaign won first place in the “Serious Fun” category at the International Media Festival for Prevention 2021 in Canada.”
